The first of these DE36 (150hp straight-eight displacing 5460cc) Hooper bodied Drop Head Saloons was painted a special jade green colour. The car made its 1948 debut on the Daimler stand at the first post-WWII Earls Court British Motor Show. Dubbed "The Green Goddess" by the motoring press, it was used for several years after the show by Sir Bernard Docker, Chairman. The example above, which is a 1949 model, went to auction at Bonhams recently with a price tag of $800,000. Only 7 were made between 1948 and 1953. The huge vehicles were over 20 feet long and weighed nearly 3 tons. |
