In 1929 the then
chairman Percy Martin initiated the development of a new
form of transmission. Fluid-Flywheel transmission enable
the driver to engage and disengage the transmission without
the use of a clutch. The transmission also allowed the car
to travel at very slow speeds. A difficult thing to achieve
with a crash gear box. To demostrate and publicise the system
a series of films was commissioned. 'Bringing
up Grandma', 'Pa Puts His
Foot Down' and 'Roadwords'. Using actors
and animation, the films featured Daimlers, Lanchesters and
BSAs fitted with the transmission. In 'Roadwords'
there is a paricular memorable scene where a test driver
engages 1st gear, sets the car running, then gets out of
the car, walks round, gets in and continues driving. |
