BARKER
SPECIAL SPORTS DROP HEAD COUPE 1948-1952
A very attractive 3 seater drop head
coupe built on the DB18 Consort saloon chassis and mechanics
by the coach builders Barker & Co. It is unusual in that
the rear seating is across the car. The flowing lines of the
car lends itself to the two tone paint work. The mechanical
hood is fully lined with wool cloth for extra warmth.
SPECIFICATION:- LAYOUT: 2 door 3 seater drop head coach built
body on a automatically lubricated steel chassis, with built
in mechanical jacking system. The main body is aluminium over
a wooden frame, the wings being steel. Front engined with
rear wheel drive.
ENGINE: A vertical in-line, 6 cylinder engine of 2,522cc capacity:
bore& stroke, 69.6*110.49 mm. Push rod operated overhead
valves in aluminium cylinder head. Compression ratio 7 to
1. Twin SU carburettors. 85 bhp at 4,200 rpm, maximum torque
116 lb,ft. at 2,200 rpm.
TRANSMISSION: Four speed pre-selector gearbox, with direct
third and overdrive fourth. A Daimler fluid flywheel and underslung
worm drive rear axle giving 22.5 mph at 1000 rpm.
SUSPENSION, STEERING,& BRAKES: Front:- independent by
coil springs and wishbones. Rear:- semi elliptic leaf springs.
The steering is the Marles worm and double roller type. The
brakes are Girling hydro-mechanical.
PERFORMANCE Top speed 80-85 mph, Acceleration 0-30 mph 7.7
secs, 0-50 mph 16.0 secs.
Fuel consumption 20-25 mpg.
